Next Big Step: Night-time Potty Training
Once children are potty trained this doesn't automatically mean they should be dry at night. On average the majority of children are not dry at night until they are approximately 3.5 to 4 years old. Some still need the safety of night-time nappies or 'sleep pants’ until the age of 5 or 6. And for those with additional medical conditions it can go beyond this age. The NHS states:
“It usually takes a little longer for children to learn to stay dry throughout the night. Although most learn this between the ages of 3 and 5, up to 1 in 5 children aged 5 sometimes wet the bed”.
UK based parenting club Bounty
“You’ll know when the right time is to start. Sometimes your little one will suggest the idea of ditching the night-time nappies. The other sign is that their nappies are dry or nearly dry for several nights in a week. That means they’ve got the physical maturity to go a whole night without weeing. However, this is not always a reliable indicator - sometimes they use their night nappy for an early morning wee because they know it’s there, which is perfectly logical.”
It's important to praise your child for success, as you did when it came to potty training. If things aren’t going well, stick with night-time nappies or ‘sleep pants’ for a little longer then try again.
Just remember accidents happen and are nothing to worry about. It will come in time as it’s dependent on individual developmental and not age. Go by your child and reward their efforts.
Waterproof mattress protectors are a good idea. We love the aptly named reusable PeapodMats which lie on top of the bed sheet and stay in place all night long. Best of all is that they are super easy to change. You simply whip them off, with no need to change the sheet.
Both our Treetops and Enchanted Forest bedding sets come in both Cot Bed and Single Bed size. They are made from 100% percale cotton. A high quality, crisp and cool 200 Thread Count weave that is lightweight and breathable helping to keep children cool and cosy at night.
Our bedding sets have been tested for night-time training. Even when repeatedly washed and tumble-dried every night as a result of bedwetting, the colours remain vibrant and fast thanks to our use of digital reactive textile printing.
We’ve created a printable reward chart sheet and certificate. Simply add a smile to each star when your child makes it through the night dry.
There are two versions to choose from a 7 night and a 14 night reward chart depending on where they are with their progress.
